Christopher Clark is a brilliant historian with an iron grasp of German history. His book will be enjoyed by fellow intellectuals, liberal thought-leaders, and those with special interest in the jagged development of the German state over the sweep of the last several centuries.Having said this, I do not think the common reader will get much enjoyment from reading this academic effort. While there will be many episodes of interest, such as on Bismark and chess, there is too much of the higher level of analysis that is lost on such as me.From p. 15: "In this book, I have tried to attend closely to the specific temporal textures of each regime. The sequence that results is more oscillating, recursive, and nonlinear than a strongly sequential and modernization-based theory would allow."
