A comprehensive and tediously detailed chronology of Motor Torpedo Boat activity in the Pacific during WWII, this volume is both informative and exhausting. Unlike William White's "They Were Expendable," which I read as a youth many years ago, "At Close Quarters..." recounts the defeats, failures and incompetencies of the men who directed, commanded and staffed these least of all naval fighting vessels, as well as their heroism and sacrifice. It also makes it clear that very often our sons and brothers, in the face of the enemy, were handicapped by the derelictions and stupidity of those who were supposed to supply them with weapons that worked. One of the greatest difficulties in reading this volume was the lack of geographic orientation, as the author's focus shifts from one area to another. The book needs maps and charts, and would benefit from an overview of the various fields of action.
This book gives a comprehensive account of American PT actions in both the Pacific and European fronts with lots of detailed accounts of actions. The "small boats" had a large impact on the war and our victory. The U.S. Navy seems to have to relearn the tactics and uses of small boats with every new conflict. The story of the brown water Navy in Viet Nam is a case in point. The Navy needs PT style boats in the Gulf of Iran to counter the small attack boats the Iranians are using instead of risking hundred million dollar destroyers.
Well researched and written. Contact and Battle scenes are described with believable detail. For a history, it reads easily with the author leading you through the Combat Areas in such a way that the overall strategy of cleaning up the Japanese outposts is clearly laid out. This must have been a difficult war, fought bravely and diligently. A book well worth reading. Having been a Crewman, Cox'n and Station Commander in the National Sea Rescue Institute in South Africa for 42 years, I could understand and feel that exhilaration of being at sea in small fast craft coming from the author's accurate description of the many voyages made by these intrepid sailors.
This book is exactly as stated written by a man that was there. The details of some of the actions came right from interviews with the participants, and from Navy records. The author takes great pains to list the OIC in command of each mission described, along with the commander of each boat involved. Also mentioned throughout are the enlisted personnel who stood out in action or deed during the missions described. This is a great book which covers all theaters of operations for PT boats during World War II. The book is easy to read and to understand the overall concept of PT boats from inception to operational phases. I gave it 4 stars because, I am looking for a more personal book describing life as a PT man and day to day experiences while serving with a squadron. So far I have read the Mosquito Fleet, and this book and will keep looking.
A very good account of PT Boats in WWII. It covers all theaters which is great because most of the time if you read anything about PT boats you would think we only had three boats, one that took Gen. MacArthur from the Philippines, one that JFK drove in front of a Japanese destroyer and got sunk and the third one stared on the 60s sit com McHales Navy. This book was fairly detailed for the most part, but was not written about any specific boat or crew, but it does cover the span of all operations and lists many crew members which is helpful if you are interested in looking up a relative perhaps. Recommended reading, it sure filled in a large gap in my knowledge of WWII that I didn't know existed.
This is a Navy report providing a comprehensive history and overview of all PT Boat operations in World War 2 by theater written by a Navy PT boat leader shortly after the war. The book provides both the big picture and "on the boat" action. It also provides details about the boat designs, their testing, training, and logistics support. Modern readers will find a good balance of sea-going action and background detail.As I read this I was struck by the everyday hardships, courage, and sacrifices made by PT Boat sailors during the war. Most naval history enthusiasts have read about the big battles. But, there were also lots of little battles against armed enemy transports, barges, and other coastal shipping. Even when they were off the beaten path that everyone has read about, PT boats had to deal with mines, strafing by enemy aircraft, and many other hazards. This book gives readers a good feel for battles big and small.
This is a rare book. By that I mean the author has not just used the after action reports of the various boats but also given a detailed listing of awards received, casualities listed individually, and the short life history of each boat. As a historian I can tell you this is a monumental work in research. I knew a little about the boats being used to put intelligence teams in, my Dad was one of them when he commanded the 41st Infantry Div Reconnisance Troop. All he ever told me about working with the PTs was they were good men to work with, from him that was a high complement. While for many people may this book may seem dry, to those of us that have studied World War II it is far from it and I strongly recommend this book to anyone that is intrested in the little known facts of the US Navy in World War II.
This book gives a very good look into the part our PT boats played in our Pacific operations. Very descriptive and informative concerning some of the battles that made the headlines back in the years of WWII. The book reads easy. I like the part of the e-reader that brings the last read page up after closing the reader. Pick it up the next day, open it up, and immediately start back where I left off.
