Overall a great story, good characters although a couple of them disgusted me a few times. Not all people are perfect though and having some that bother you drives the story. I would have given this a 5 but in the later stages of the book it was obvious a showdown was coming and it seemed like it was dragged out a bit waiting for it. Having said that, the ending was worth the wait. It is almost surprising nowadays to see a single book story without at least 2 more books following it, but all in all a great read that keeps you interested and definitely stands on its own. I have read about 75 books in the past three months and this story is one of those that I imagine I will remember. The world was interesting and the magic (is it magic) system is unique.
For a first book and first series this is an enjoyable read. You see both the progression of the characters and the writer as you read. The characters are really well done. The story line is well done. The classic good vs evil with twists and turns everywhere. I very much enjoyed the series and highly recommend them to anyone.
