I purchased the first edition of the book in September and my daughter received admission into Stuyvesant High School for Fall of 2016. I am writing this review for two reasons.1)My daughter found the practice exams in this book to be very useful and we are excited for her to start Stuyvesant High School.2)Her brother will be taking the exam next year, and we just purchased the second edition and I have to say I am very happy in what they are offering. My son wants to attend Bronx Science because he is interested in one of their programs. Evidently, Argo Brothers offers free live test support, so I decided to fill out their form on the website regarding a few questions my son needed further help in, and I received a call from Michael, who is a tutor for this company literally within 20 minutes, and he guided my son through those questions. I must say I am very impressed they have this support feature.If you’re preparing for the specialized high school exam, this book is a no brainer, hands down one of the best books to use to prepare for the shsat exam. I hope my son will be able to score high enough for Bronx Science, I had him start early because this exam is very intensive.  I would also recommend using the live support feature, if anyone has any difficulties on a problem.
There is nothing that i dislike about the book. First thing, today when i took a practice test in this book and when i was reviewing it there was lot of question in the test that i didn't know how to do, but when i when to their website and watched the videos about the question, everything make sensed. Second thing, i like their explanations about certain questions about the book because they helped me and when i went to there website i didn't know how to sign up but in the 2nd page of the book it shows how to sign up step by step. This book is the best of all the SHSAT book i have
My first daughter got into Bronx Science, using their books. I bought this year for my another daughter. I love their video explanations. That helps a lot.
This book is very helpful for the SHSAT Prep. The ELA passages are challenging and thus prepare you very effectively. The multiple choice questions are structured differently from any other material my son used so far and force you to actually think what you just read. The math section is very good and covers a multitude of things. Highly recommend this book as an additional source for SHAST Prep.
My son is in a honor class and have done most of the SHSAT practice books available in Amazon. He uses this book to prepare for SHSAT in 2016. He hates the book and refuses to do the practices, especially ELA. The rules and guidelines are entirely different from other books which make the questions seem to be "new" and "different" but instead they are confusing. The Reading section is overly complicated and hard to understand. The Logical Reasoning is also confusing because some questions are vague. In addition, the answer keys are different from the answers and explanations. Some answers are not accurate. The Math is OK but not much of a challenge. Overall this book does nothing but is confusing.
This book was clearly rushed and not properly edited. It contains too many questions that are ambiguous, irrelevant, or just plainly incorrect. It could possibly cause more harm than good to a student. Avoid it, and wait until some better resources become available.â€
The level of difficulty is right and the explanations are understandable. The review section of the book actually thought me a couple new things. The explanatory YouTube videos are also very helpful.
This book is put together quite well. On the first pages the authors go over the recent changes to the SHSAT and they cover the test-day tips. That is followed by close to 60 pages of review of English and Math concepts kids need to know. Going over those a child can already see where the weak areas are. The rest is dedicated to the 5 practice tests where the first page is conveniently dedicated to the "bubble sheet" (I prefer to make a copy for my son so he doesn't have to flip the pages back and forth), taking an extra step in making it feel even more like the real test. The book encourages kids to complete the entire 3 hour test in one sitting to truly get an idea of what the test will be like. At the end of each test there are pretty detailed explanations for both English and Math. I do plan to get the book when my younger one is in 7th grade in a couple of years. There are also a wealth of YouTube videos that cover material well beyond the SHSAT. I should also mention that personally, I really like the quality of paper used in the book.
