It's hard to write this review - the book is more or less enjoyable, and Clive Davis comes across as a highly intelligent man who, despite his great success and the great wealth it has brought him, is rather well grounded. He's clearly grateful for his "ears" and adoring of the talents of the many singers he's helped to make prominent and famous. And unlike other books of this type, he does not bring venom to his discussions of people with whom he doesn't get along or from whom he's become estranged; he lays out the facts as he sees them and tries to be fair and charitable to others' positions. The problem with the book is that once you get roughly halfway through this very lengthy book (just over 550 pages, excluding the index), the stories begin to sound alike. "And then I met...", "The next stage of my life...", and so on. There is a sameness to all of his stories, whether they concern raging success or disappointing failure. So at the end of the day, I'd have preferred some more judicious editing that would have made each of the "tracks" of his "soundtrack" a bit more significant instead of blending together like one big tub of margarine.SPOILER ALERTI also found it a bit odd that in the last 10 pages of the book he suddenly brings up his separation from his second wife, who goes largely unmentioned for several hundred pages (the oddness stemming, in part, from the fact that he talks quite a bit about his upbringing and his first wife early in the book, making it seem as though his second wife was peripheral to his existence), and then talks about his discovery of his bisexuality. This is not a criticism of his biesexuality - it's just that if it's an important aspect of his later life, as he suggests, why deal with it as if it's an afterthought?

I feel like I've been thoroughly schooled on the music industry. This was a very fascinating read with indepth stories captivatingly told by Clive Davis about some of the biggest names in the music industry. The book also chronicles Clive's journey from his humble beginnings to becoming one of the most powerful and sought after excecutives in the music industry. It's amazing what Clive has done and the lives he has impacted. He can truly say his life hasn't been in vain. I also appreciate how he tells the good along with the bad, letting us know that he hasn't been perfect in his decisions and choices. Overall this is a wonderful read.

Mr. Davis paints a vivid picture of his humble upbringing in NY and also let's readers in to how important it is to dream big and follow those dreams with drive and ferocity. The artists that he worked with for the past 60 years is amazing. His shrewd business moves put him in position to make not only a fortune for himself but also for countless others along the way. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.

I read every word as fast as possible of Clive Davis's memoir. If you are at all interested in pop music in America of the past forty years or so, this is the memoir to read. No one knows more about how music stars are discovered, signed, let go, rehabilitated, lose out, or win big than Clive Davis. According to the book, Janis Joplin's performance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 was so thrilling, it changed Clive Davis from a mere lawyer to a big-time talent scout. If it had been up to me, Janis Joplin would never have been signed. Call me an old fart -- I just never "got" her. I get Whitney Houston and am glad Clive Davis put her on the musical map and grieve alongside him about the way she ruined her voice and life with drugs. Maybe a tragic end is part of the star package? Even Milli Vanilli were part of the Davis legacy, the two lip-synchers who did not actually sing the songs on their albums and fell from grace because of it. I have always wondered why the singers who did the actual singing were never brought in to sing for themselves. The music business is notoriously difficult, careers perilous, egos immense, success fleeting. To judge from this book, Clive Davis has stayed in it so long by having "golden ears" for popular music and maintaining a gracious yet not overly familial relationship with his artists. In some ways, he seems to have glided along with barely a dip into the dark side, of doubt, of relationships, of the situations that do so many people in. Perhaps he did and just too much of a gentleman to spell it out.

Better than the first time but it can still be summed up by saying, " I signed so and so. I helped find radio friendly hits. The first record was a smash. He/she insisted on a new producer/writing their own songs and I advised against it. But I let t h e m do it anyway. They never matched their early efforts ever again and we parted ways, but as friends. " that said, lots of priceless stories and a great read.

If you like music read this book. Probably the greatest record executive of the past 40 years and he does a great job of telling the full story here. What will receive the most interest is the chapters on individual stars like Janis Joplin and primarily Whitney Houston. Davis does a great job discussing his influence without attempting to take all the credit. It was interesting to hear his discussions on artists that wanted to write songs after an initial album not recognizing his input song selection may have been the key.I read this shortly after reading Tommy Matolla's autobiography and found this to be a great combination book. Tommy's book is shorter and a lighter read. This book is longer and much more involved. They are both exceptional!
